More Liberal Gun Control Garbage
The Left just will not stop its assault on the Second Amendment. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, on CNN this past weekend, touted a long-used liberal myth about guns and personal protection. “This mythology that you end up killing bad guys by arming good guys just doesn’t work. Reality is that if you have a gun at home, you are more likely to be killed by it than to kill an attacker or someone that’s going after your neighbor.”
How do they arrive at such seemingly alarming statistics? To say it plainly, they lie, just like they always do when it comes to stats.
To arrive at such numbers, that you are much more likely to die with your own gun if you have one in your home, they include suicides committed with firearms! So yeah you are more likely to die by your own gun if you stick it in your mouth and pull the trigger! But these stats, as well as others just like it, are used to push a political agenda, not to convey truth.
A relatively new, and increasing vocal, organization – Moms Demand Action – and their very liberal, and lying, leader – Shannon Watts – have used this statistic, and others, widely.
Earlier this year she was asked, “Is there an example in school shootings or a mall shooting or these public facilities, where that has been wrong? Where a bad guy with a gun has been stopped in any other way or by a person other than a law enforcement officer with a gun or by killing himself?” And she answered with the same old liberal talking point: “This has never happened. Data shows it doesn’t happen.
You get that? IT. NEVER. HAPPENS. But, truth is, we know it happens, every day! Statistics show that it happens over two million times per year. Watts loves to appear on liberal shows and spout her lies but when she’s confronted by a conservative, she cowers and runs, refusing to have an open and honest debate about these issues.
If Ms. Watts and her ilk, which would include the hypocritical Michael Bloomberg, would simply follow AWR Hawkins of Breitbart they would see it for themselves – guns save lives. But they don’t want to. They want to push a totalitarian agenda either because they are dupes and “useful idiots,” as Lenin labeled them, or because they are little Stalins. Both are bad.
So, the bottom line is, never trust a liberal with statistics. As Mark Twain once said, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics.” And with modern-day Democrats, he wasn’t lying!
Crying Wolf: The Pseudo-Campus Rape Epidemic
Speaking of statistics, Breitbart smashed up another liberal myth this week, the oft-told tale of how many women are subjected to sexual assault on college campuses. The feminists seem to be desperate to create an anti-women climate in this country, hinging off Obama’s “war on women” mantra. They state that 1 in 5 women will be the victim of sexual assault during their time at college. That sounds more like a backward, third world banana republic than the United States.
Well, like guns, it just ain’t so. A Justice Department study (yes, an Obama/Holder Justice Department study), concluded that the actual number was 6.1 per one thousand, or 0.61 percent. That’s less than one percent, not the 20 percent they have been citing.
Rape is a serious and awful crime but lying about it and falsely accusing young men on college campuses of being rapists is only hurting their cause. With the UVA rape case by Rolling Stone and the Lena Dunham lies, both in just the past couple of weeks and both thoroughly torn apart by Breitbart, this is becoming a case of “crying wolf” too often. And these are not the only two cases where the stories have been question or even been proved as pure fabrications, as Eric Owens of the Daily Caller pointed out yesterday.
It seems we have a new victim group in America for liberals to exploit: survivors of campus rape, and many are eager to join the club. Ann Coulter said it best in her column last week, “The College Rape Club“: “The main threat to college students’ physical and emotional safety these days comes not from athletes or fraternity members, but from the feminists.” There is no epidemic of campus rape in this country; only an epidemic of false accusations and victimization. And that’s becoming the real tragedy.
And Speaking of Hypocrites and Liars in the Media …
If you didn’t know that journalism in this country is truly dead, especially after all the campus rape falsities, then the coverage of Elizabeth Warren’s stance against the “cromnibus” spending bill should be proof enough. The liberal press has hailed Senator Warren as a fighter and a champion of the causes she truly believes in when she took to the floor to encourage the House to defeat the spending bill.
Yet when Ted Cruz mounted an effort to fight for what he believes in and stop Obamacare last year, or the “cromnibus” last week, he was labeled a “terrorist” and an “anarchist.” The hypocrisy is astounding and has been assailed by many in the alternative media (actually its the true media), Fox’s Megyn Kelly and Charles Krauthammer in particular.
To see what I mean, just look at these two side-by-side headlines today from Yahoo:
And they call us members of the “flat earth society.” Give me a break!
We saw this today and just had to include it in our News Shorts. It’s so true:
After a week of passionate debate and late night votes, the Senate passed a $1.1 trillion spending bill this Saturday that will keep the entire federal government, except the Department of Homeland Security, funded through September 2015.
Here are three lessons conservatives should take away from the ordeal:
- Corporatism is King – Money talks and activists walk. That is the sad lesson from a $1.1 trillion spending bill that included huge payoffs to Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Citibank, and corporations that use taxpayer subsidized loans to invest overseas. Meanwhile, House leaders did nothing to stop President Obama’s executive amnesty other than offer up a show vote on a separate piece of legislation that had no chance of even being voted on in the Senate.
- Republican Leaders Want To Cave On Amnesty – Not only did Republican leaders not even allow a vote on an amendment to defund Obama’s amnesty, even though they included plenty of other restrictions on federal spending in the omnibus, but they even included more than a billion in spending on programs to clean up Obama’s last amnesty, including $948 million for the Department of Health and Human Service’s unaccompanied children program and $260 million for the State to Department to spend on Central American countries.
- Republican Leaders Lie – Not only did Republican leaders lie about Congress’s ability to defund the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services office, the agency in charge of implementing Obama’s amnesty, but they also lied to Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) in order to get his vote on an early procedural matter, and they falsely claimed that Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) empowered Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to sneak more Obama nominees past the Senate.
None of these lessons are good news for conservatives. If anything they show that with Reid out of the way in the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) are going to be very eager to cut big deals with Obama so they can prove to Washington elites that they can “govern.” These deals will all benefit large corporations almost always at the expense of small businesses and middle class Americans.
Mississippi’s Education Funding Shortfall
In a report by the AP out today, the state of Mississippi faces a serious education funding budget gap of $1.5 billion since 2008. This year the state may have to trim another $280 million from the education budget. That much remains to be seen.
We do find this humorous though. In the last US Senate campaign, it was Chris McDaniel, being the “radical Tea Party fanatic” that he is, that was supposed to be the cause of such a calamity, especially if he made it to Washington. Mississippi would stand to lose $700 million a year and our schools would have to close, at least according to the fools in the state’s GOP establishment in their gutless, leftwing slash-and-burn campaign.
So, it seems our state has screwed things up all on its own. But the issue is not necessarily money, or lack thereof; it’s bureaucracy and centralized, top-down management. Schools are too big, too cumbersome, and too administrative top-heavy, for starters.
The true question to ask is this: Why does it seem not to matter whether we spend tons on education, as we did after getting casinos and the tobacco settlement, or less, as we are doing now? There’s more at stake in education than simply using the old liberal adage of throwing money at a problem to assuage your guilty conscious. It takes real reform, which Senator McDaniel was willing to talk about, but sadly no one else was.
I guess it will have to be Super Thad to the rescue on this one!
