As we await an announcement from Senator Chris McDaniel on his political future, it is clear that the Establishment is preparing for a possible conservative challenge to Roger Wicker. And their preparation is two-fold: Place Wicker close to Donald Trump and pull McDaniel away from him.
Wicker and his court jesters have pounded the factually challenged statistic that Wicker votes with Trump over 96 percent of the time, which we have debunked on several occasions. It is a strategy that is designed to make people believe Wicker has always stood with Trump but the truth is Wicker, as head of the NRSC in 2016, was telling US Senate candidates to back away from Trump. Wicker even referred to Trump as a “misguided missile.”
Now, in a recent diatribe on a well-known Establishment rag site, Wicker lackeys attempted to portray McDaniel as anti-Trump by cherry-picking Facebook posts that were critical of the President.
Chris McDaniel, though, is principled. He’s going to criticize the President when he believes he is wrong but praise him when he thinks he’s right. And he stands with Trump far more than he criticizes him.
In fact, there are literally dozens of McDaniel’s pro-Trump Facebook posts that the Establishment hacks conveniently forgot to mention. Like this one from July 24:
“Mitch McConnell is doing everything in his power to crush conservatives. He’s likewise attempting to ruin and obstruct Donald Trump.”
Or this one from June 26:
“Have you noticed the same establishment politicians who fought Trump for the party’s nomination are the very ones who try to publicly convince you they back his policies while privately working to undermine his presidency?”
Most recently, on October 19, McDaniel stated that he stands with Donald Trump on his promise to “drain the DC swamp,” and as a United States Senator, if he decides to run against Wicker, will “help him keep his promise. We must drain the swamp. We must change Washington. And the first step begins with removing Mitch McConnell.”
And Roger Wicker has pledged his support and loyalty to Mitch McConnell. That should tell you a lot.
But as we have said here at MCD, if Wicker was really interested in helping Trump he would fight to remove the filibuster and pass the President’s agenda, but he is standing with Democrats to keep their best weapon in place.
Trump also has many nominees for important positions that are lagging in the Senate. Perhaps Wicker should get to work on getting the President’s appointments confirmed.
But here’s the real difference between Roger Wicker and Chris McDaniel on support for Trump and the Trump Agenda:
Chris McDaniel has stood for the very same policies advocated by Donald Trump before Trump ever jumped into the race for the White House. He’s been for tax reform, secure borders, better trade deals, draining the swamp before draining the swamp was cool, and a more prudent foreign policy, to name a few. In fact, he campaigned on these issues in 2014, which is why Donald Trump endorsed him over Thad Cochran.
BUT Roger Wicker has not been reliable on this issues in his 20+ years on the Hill. He’s only sucking up to Donald Trump because he can’t defend his own sorry record.
