“You can wipe out an entire generation, you can burn their homes to the ground and somehow they’ll still find their way back. But if you destroy their history, you destroy their achievements and it’s as if they never existed.” – Frank Stokes, The Monuments Men
The American Left becomes more unhinged every day. You see, leftists believe the year is still 1965 and the awful events at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama have just taken place. The clock for everyone else in the world may read 2017, but liberals and their warped minds are in 1965.
Discuss race relations with any liberal and you will find yourself caught in a time warp – the Klan still exists, continuing to terrorize blacks every night, while discrimination and systemic racism run rampant around the South and the entire nation.
Think I’ve lost my mind? It’s a theme that’s been discussed before but, if you must, read the latest hit piece from The Daily Beast and you’ll see what I mean.
The Setting: New Orleans and the city’s monuments to the Confederacy.
The Author: Barrett Holmes Pitner.
The Title: “New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu Isn’t Stuck in 1865.”
Pitner, unsurprisingly, praises Mayor Landrieu for ordering the removal (and secret destruction) of the city’s monuments to Confederate leaders and blames all the problems on Southern whites – “the racist, tyrannical factions that have consistently stymied progress and sowed division in the South have risen to terrorize those who champion diversity.”
He paints a lovely picture of his idea of diversity. “From the first second that someone steps foot in New Orleans, the diversity of its culture shines through. The food, architecture, music, French-influenced accents and names, and so much more distinguish New Orleans as an American city that has been defined by its diversity for hundreds of years. The English, French, German, and Spanish have all called the city home. The culture of Louisiana’s indigenous peoples can also still be felt in the city.”
Mayor Mitch Landrieu agrees. “The future does not belong to small Southern cities who honor the Confederacy. The first thing we want to do is reclaim our real history, and tell it in its totality.”
“Yet Louisiana still suffers from the scourge of pro-Confederate propaganda,” writes Pitner, “that has blighted and de facto governed the South for more than a century. The goal remains to misrepresent four years of failure as a long and proud history, which never existed. Defenders of the Confederacy also display no hesitation to harass and terrorize those who object to their vile propaganda and historical misrepresentations.”
So consider the blatant hypocrisy in the arguments of both of these “champions of diversity,” Pitner and Landrieu: They both praise the totality of history (i.e. “real history”) and diversity, so long as it’s not white Southerners or anything to do with the Confederacy. Which, to all of us in the real world, means it isn’t true diversity at all, only the Leftist version of it.
There have been reports of some harassment directed at those taking down the monuments by people who are rightfully angry (including some black folks) but most it, as Pitner mentions, was on social media, and falls far short of terrorism and the kind of acts depicted by Mayor Landrieu. “I have been really, really surprised at how aggressive the individuals are who don’t want these monuments down have been, and how similar they are in tone to burning crosses on lawns and bombing churches. The tactics sound exactly the same.” See what I mean? Pitner is right, Landrieu’s mind is not in 1865; it’s in 1965.
Has Pitner said anything about the ANTIFA thugs and their violent tactics, not just in New Orleans, but across the country? Has Mitch Landrieu? Did they mention the merry band of thugs who showed up in a military vehicle with crude language on the side of it? Did they mention the masked vigilantes who routinely show up to “protest” the monuments? Or the man with a shotgun who threatened monument supporters on Twitter? Or the vandals that spray painted the monuments and threw paint on them? (I thought they were to be preserved?) No, not a peep. I guess those folks fit the modern New Orleans definition of diversity. (But we should point out that the New Orleans police did ban masks at any future protests, and that’s a good thing.)
So why do they target, trash and tarnish Southern history in such a merciless fashion? Simple – to de-legitimize it by equating it with “terrorism” and “violence,” which they hope will ultimately destroy it.
And believe me, they want to destroy it totally. They seek its death and burial.
Writes Pitner, “The terrors of the past that many Americans thought had been confined to the past have been progressively normalized and they have reemerged with a commitment to intimidate those who have an American vision that champions equality, diversity, and an accurate retelling of our history.”
Note his words carefully: a “retelling” of history. Translation: The Triumph of Leftist Propaganda.
Says Landrieu, “Those four statues, in the most prominent places, reflect four years of our history and the attitude that allows those statues to stand up is an attitude that has allowed New Orleans to shrink. We know how to reach toward the future and retain our past, but our past has to be the honest past and not the dishonest past.”
Note his words carefully: The “dishonest past,” an obvious shot at the Confederacy and the larger South.
And believe what they say: they want it gone. All of it. You see, Leftists are not Anti-Fascist; they are true Fascists. 100 percent. As David Horowitz says, “Inside every progressive is a totalitarian screaming to get out.”
And what do totalitarians want but total control. The Confederacy and the battle flag represents the opposite of the Leftist vision – a decentralized state based on individualism and separate, sovereign communities.
In short, the Confederacy was not about slavery (slavery was legal in the US throughout the war period, and, no, Lincoln was NOT an abolitionist); it was about rebellion to centralized authority. That’s why the Left hates the South and loathes the Confederacy, which was the greatest act of rebellion to centralized authority in US history. So all reminders of it must go, lest we try it again some day.
So make no mistake about it, this dishonest effort on the part of Leftists across the country, especially Mayor Landrieu in New Orleans, to erase Southern and Confederate history is designed to destroy the past and build a future based on their viewpoint, which is no different than the vision ISIS has for the Middle East. May neither one ever succeed.
