With less than a month to go before election day, social media is pulsing with activity from Team Cindy, as they work overtime to try to convince voters of the worthiness of their candidate, Appointed Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.
Scrolling through various posts on Facebook, it doesn’t take very long to see that Team Cindy is particularly defensive about their candidate’s past membership in the Democratic Party and her support for Hillary Clinton in 2008.
This latter charge has stung Hyde-Smith to the point that she recently came out with a strong statement denying it. “I could swear to you on a stack of Bibles that would go through the roof of the building we are standing in – I have never and would never vote for Hillary Clinton,” she said, which led former Mississippi Democratic Party chair Rickey Cole to label her statement “a blasphemous lie.” Since both were close friends, I’d say that speaks volumes.
Seeing Hyde-Smith’s glaring weaknesses, Team Cindy has become particularly nasty on social media with their incessant claims that the interim senator is a “lifelong conservative,” despite her long career as a Democrat.
With passions and tempers running hot, how are undecided voters to know what’s right and what’s wrong? By doing what fanatical liberal Democrats were unwilling to do with Brett Kavanaugh: Examining facts and corroborating evidence.
“Facts are stubborn things,” John Adams once said, “and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”
So, let’s look at real evidence, shall we? And that is Cindy Hyde-Smith’s voting record in the US Senate up to this point. This will tell us all we need to know.
Cindy Hyde-Smith assumed office in the US Senate on April 9, 2018 after her appointment by Governor Phil Bryant, which means that she has been in office for six months. And, despite only a handful of votes thus far, her ratings from conservative groups are not good.
Here are the liberal votes she cast that secured for her the grade of failure:
She voted in favor of the recent omnibus spending bill with a price tag of $854 billion that funded several departments at levels that exceeded what President Trump asked for. It fully funded Planned Parenthood and the Office of Refugee Resettlement’s unaccompanied alien child refugee program.
She voted against Rand Paul’s “Penny Plan” that would cut just one penny out of every federal dollar for the next five years and restore the spending caps Congress previously agreed to impose, thereby balancing the budget in half a decade. Paul’s plan also expanded Health Savings Accounts.
She voted to extend the failed and insolvent National Flood Insurance Program, despite the fact that Republicans have pledged to reform it. The program, which requires inland taxpayers to subsidize those who live near the coast, is already $20.5 billion in debt and requires a taxpayer bailout every few years.
She voted to table (kill) a Mike Lee amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would “clarify that an authorization to use military force, a declaration of war, or any similar authority does not authorize the detention without charge or trial of a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States.” This simply means that she favors the government possessing the authority to detain US citizens without charges or trial during wartime, in clear violation of the Bill of Rights. In fact, the Supreme Court ruled 9-0 in 1866 that such a policy was unconstitutional (Ex parte Milligan)
She voted in favor of the Farm Bill, which came in at nearly half a trillion dollars, most of it spent on food stamps. The bill excluded the work requirements that President Trump asked for and continues the massive farm subsidy program, with most of the money (73 percent) going to the wealthiest farms that have an annual income of $4 million.
These few examples are enough to conclusively prove that Team Cindy’s social media minions are deceiving voters about their candidate’s supposed conservatism. “Lifelong conservatives” don’t vote to detain US citizens without trial during wartime, or anytime for that matter. They don’t vote in favor of bills that increase government spending and extend massive crony capitalism programs. And they don’t vote against efforts to impose small cuts in total federal spending.
Despite the propaganda from her crack campaign team, Cindy Hyde-Smith is not a “lifelong conservative” and the preponderance of the evidence tells us so.
